How should you plan your workplace learning?
Plan at least 120 hours of direct support work alongside assessment evidence, host arrangements and screening.
What does the minimum mean?
The assessment record for CHCCCS040 (Support independence and wellbeing) requires at least 120 hours of direct support work in at least one relevant organisation, and evidence of safely supporting at least three people. CHCCCS040 is one of the nine core units in CHC33021, so it is part of every valid specialisation and general package.
The 120-hour minimum is not a separate 120 hours per stream or per unit. The RTO must confirm how the same approved work and evidence meet all selected unit requirements. Additional time may be needed for competence or host/provider arrangements.
Do hours alone complete the course?
No. Your assessor needs evidence that meets the unit requirements. CHCCCS031 specifies simulation before workplace assessment and distinguishes the settings for different evidence. Ask for an approved assessment plan.
Who will arrange the host?
The qualification’s work requirement does not guarantee a placement. Ask who finds the host, what support is available and what happens if a place is delayed. Get the timetable and any costs in writing.
Will the placement be paid?
An unpaid vocational placement must meet the applicable conditions described by Fair Work. Ask the provider and host to explain the arrangement; a student label alone does not settle payment status.
What should be agreed before you start?
Ask the RTO and host to agree their responsibilities in writing. An advertised online course or a current support job does not, by itself, confirm that your practical work and evidence will meet the assessment requirements.
- Who finds the host, and who confirms that the setting is suitable?
- Who supervises the work, assesses the evidence and approves hour records?
- Which direct support activities and assessment evidence must be completed?
- How will shifts, travel, missed time and any delay fit your timetable?
- Which checks must be accepted by this host before you start?
- What costs, insurance or other responsibilities need written confirmation?
- How will approved evidence records protect the people receiving support?
- Check the host’s screening requirements before the first shift
- Match your practical setting to the stream you choose
- Plan study time, units and course costs
- Can I finish the course just by logging 120 hours?
- How can I plan placement around paid work?
- Can my current support job be used for assessment?
- Who finds my placement and what happens if it is delayed?
- Compare dated provider records and ask about host arrangements
